Description

Warrior shield Merina Ethno, replica of original
Dimensions: 75 x 38 x 6 cm, 5 kg, approx. 1980. The ethnic group of Merina settles in the central highlands of Madagascar and has always been the „royal people“. All of the principalities and kingdoms of Madagascar have been subjugated to central power over the centuries. In Madagascar, the craft of metalworking and ceramics production is hardly common. So even weapons and shields were made entirely of wood, you do not know how seriously the wars of otherwise very gentle residents were conducted. The Merina decorate many items with ritual representations of sacred animals and scenes from everyday life. This should give strength and serve the ancestors.
Although this shield is a replica of a former object, but by its enormous rarity also again a unique piece. There is no tourist art market on the island, which would mass market such art objects, the interest is just not there.
